The Coming Wave of Private Investments—What You Need to Know

Your February Newsletter: Investment predictions and new private investments being sold

Hi Reader,

This month's newsletter covers timely updates on 401(k) changes for 2025 and new investment products brokers may start selling soon.

This time of year also marks 'prediction season' for Wall Street banks and stock market pundits. Especially in today's economic and political environment, it's inevitable to see analysts predicting a stock market decline, a recession, a depression, or worse.

Here's the thing to remember if these headlines ever cause you angst—they are almost always wrong.

Dimensional Fund Advisors recently published an article summarizing how Wall Street’s top analysts predicted the S&P 500 would perform in 2024. Spoiler alert, no one came close to predicting correctly:

Last year's results were not unusual. These predictions have been made for decades, and the long-term performance of stock market forecasters is rarely any better than last year. Remember, these predictions are made to attract attention, generate trades amongst their clients, and make sales.

Instead of making market predictions, we focus on ensuring you have a solid financial plan—one that works no matter where the stock market ends up next year.

There is a lot that we can control with your financial plan. We can review your retirement guardrails or Monte Carlo analysis to highlight the strength of your plan. We can review your portfolio’s diversification which helps protect against sharp market declines when they occur. We can develop a tax-efficient withdrawal and Roth conversion strategy to minimize taxes.

We look forward to speaking with many of you this spring. Watch for spring meeting invitations next month, where we’ll review your plan together. Of course, if there’s anything you’d like to discuss before then, just reply to this email, and we’ll be in touch.

Regards,

The Arnold & Mote Team

February Webinar: The Coming Wave of Private Investment Sales

Many investments are currently limited to accredited investors—those who meet specific net worth and income requirements.

However, this may change. Recent legislative drafts propose loosening restrictions on selling 'private investments' to everyday investors. If these changes pass, expect a surge of salespeople promising higher returns, greater diversification, and asset preservation.

Some of these products have also recently been approved for inclusion in ETFs and mutual funds, allowing broker to sell them and making them accessible in IRAs and brokerage accounts.

This month, we’ll take a deep dive into these products—their appeal to sellers, their risks, and what investors need to know.

In this webinar, we’ll cover:

  • Why private investment sales pitches may become more common
  • Examples of private investments
  • The pros and cons of private investments
  • How private investments compare to assets at Schwab and other custodians

Join us for the live broadcast at noon Central Time on Friday, February 21st, streamed on our YouTube channel here:

From the Blog: 2025 401(k) Contribution Limits

One of the most significant changes coming in 2025 is an additional catch-up contribution for individuals aged 60 to 63 in 401(k), 403(b), and other employer-sponsored retirement accounts.

In this blog post, we break down this change and outline the 401(k) contribution limits for savers of all ages.
