Summer Investing Plans and Preparing Your Family For College

Your June enewsletter: Investments to avoid, college planning

Hi Reader,

We hope summer is bringing you sunshine and some time to relax!

Financial markets and the media rarely take time off, and these past few months have been no exception. So below, we've included two resources to help explain the benefits of tuning out the attention-grabbing headlines and give you the confidence to step away and enjoy this season, while remaining confident with your financial plan.

Summer also means that college application season is just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to discuss how to financially and emotionally prepare your family for college. If you have a child or grandchild attending college soon, be sure to read below for information on this month's webinar.

Finally, we are happy to announce an addition to the Arnold & Mote family! Matt Hylland and his wife Jessica welcomed their new daughter, Mckenna Hylland, on May 21st. Although sleep deprived, Matt, Jess, Olen, and Mckenna are doing great and enjoying life as a family of 4!

Happy Summer,

The Arnold & Mote Team

June Webinar - Preparing College Students for Success - Tips For Parents, Grandparents, and Students

For most families, the biggest investment they will make, besides saving for retirement, is helping a child or grandchild pay for college.

However, planning for college should not stop after you have made enough 529 contributions. The next, and arguably most important, step is to make sure your investment pays off.

And that is no guarantee, because college students today face many challenges—few of which are solved by a 529 account balance.

This month, our webinar features two guests: Megan Hicks, who is the Registrar at Cornell College, and her husband, Tom Hicks, who is a Student Support Coordinator at the University of Iowa.

They are the perfect pair, with many years of experience in the field, to offer advice that you and your student can use to get the most out of the college experience.

In this webinar, we cover:

  • The challenges that college students face today
  • Steps college students can take for success
  • Steps parents and grandparents can take to help their loved ones succeed

Join us at Noon Central Time on Friday, June 28th for the live broadcast, which will be released on our YouTube channel here:

If you can't attend live, a replay of the webinar will be accessible immediately after and available with recordings of all previous webinars on our YouTube channel.

If you missed last month's webinar, here is the recording of "Inflation Reduction Act - Tax Credits Available for Home Improvements and EV Purchases."

From The Blog:

Why We Don’t Invest Clients into Funds that Sell Covered Calls

Covered call funds are investments that use derivatives to offer increased dividends to investors. These types of investments get a lot of attention online and attract billions of dollars from investors each year.

However, just because an investment has a high dividend yield does not mean it is a good investment. In this article and video, we look at the downsides of using these funds for long-term investing, and show how investors would have fared in these funds compared to lower-cost index funds.

If you are interested in our take on other investment strategies you may read about online, this article on covered calls is a portion of a prior webinar we did, "Investments We Don't Use for Our Clients", that addresses several other popular investment strategies today.

Arnold & Mote In The Press

USA Today: What is an Index Fund?

Our investment philosophy is based on several core principles, one of which is to invest in low-cost index funds.

We are hardly alone in this view, as index funds today hold trillions of dollars of investor savings.

However, millions of dollars in marketing budgets are still spent in hopes of getting you to invest in higher-cost, actively managed investments instead. Making a decision on the best investment for you can be challenging without help.

For this article, we were interviewed by USA Today to provide a brief description of an index fund and list basic advantages of using these types of investments compared to other options.

If you'd like to see more detail on the advantage of index funds compared to other investment options, see our past webinar recording here: Why Index Funds are Better than Actively Managed Funds
